How to Curate Your Social Media for Empowerment and Enhanced Well-Being
The Influence of Social Media on Your Well-Being
You’ve probably heard the age-old saying: “You are the culmination of the five people you spend the most time with.” But here’s a thought-provoking twist: you might now spend more time on social media than with any of those five real-life people! Whoa! This realization is powerful because, just like the real-life people you surround yourself with, the energy you curate on social media—through who you follow and what you browse—is equally contagious. This is why curating your social media for your well-being is so important.
Tips For Curating Your Social Media Feed
It’s crucial to curate who you follow on social media and to start by paying attention to how you FEEL when you see their pages, videos, or posts. Ask yourself:
- Do you feel empowered and inspired?
- Or do you feel disempowered and filled with comparison?
- Do you feel uplifted and seen?
- Or do you feel deflated and not enough?
Your emotional response to social media content can have a profound impact on your overall well-being. What you focus on magnifies and spills over into all areas of your life. While scrolling social media can be entertaining, the people you engage with online can transcend mere entertainment and actually affect you emotionally.
Conduct a Social Media Audit
One effective strategy I use is to regularly audit who I follow on social media. Here’s how:
- Pay Attention to Your Feelings: Notice how you feel when you see someone’s posts. Are their updates uplifting, informative, and inspiring? Or do they leave you feeling negative or inadequate?
- Unfollow When Necessary: If a page or account doesn’t contribute positively to your life, consider unfollowing it. Energy is contagious, and you deserve to curate an online environment that supports your well-being.
How To Be Intentional About Your Online Environment
Today, I encourage you to be intentional about the sources of JOY and INSPIRATION you seek out. Follow people who:
- Have Achieved What You Aspire To: Choose those who have actually accomplished the goals you’re working toward, not just those who are good at talking about them.
- Uplift and Support You: Connect with individuals who add value to your life and genuinely want you to succeed.
You are worthy of living your best life and giving your time and attention to people who support and encourage you. Curating a positive and inspiring social media feed is a powerful way to enhance your mindset and overall quality of life.
